My wife Donna is good about celebration. She can find and celebrate the most, in my opinion, mundane things in life, like the eggs that every day she collects from the hen house. She celebrates sun rises and sun sets. She drags me from my chair to come, see, and celebrate with her. She often celebrates the work that the many volunteers who help on the farm do with ‘Dilly Bars all around.’ She celebrates victories over weeds and potato beetles. She celebrates finding earth worms with her earth worm dance. She celebrates the end of a long day by counting her blessings and remembering the joys of the day. She celebrates when the day is going great and when, quite honestly, her plate is full and she has demands on her coming from all directions.
Donna is a good reminder to me to take time to celebrate not only the big stuff, (like completing a sanctuary project, having a great mission trip or VBS, or finding that new pastor) but to celebrate the small things too (like those who greet us at the doors and make us feel welcome, the noise of children in our sanctuary, to friendship that have been formed over decades, or the kind word spoken just when we need it.)
It is easy to take for granted all the things that go on here at church, easy to relegate them to the ordinary or mundane. I am wondering about the things you see, feel, or experience here at church that should be celebrated here at church and would love to hear about them. Drop me an email or a note and let me know and I’ll start a list.
Paul says this in his letter to the church in Philippi:
“Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say it rejoice.’
Let’s take some time to rejoice to celebrate all that God is doing in us and around us.
